Turning waste into treasure from papermaking sludge

Dec 08, 2021

How to treat sludge has always been a headache for many paper mills - the traditional incineration and landfill treatment methods not only have high treatment cost, but also pollute the environment. In liaohekou Ecological Economic Zone, Panjin City, small earthworms easily solve this problem and drive a green circular industrial chain.

On November 19, the reporter saw several strip-shaped mounds in Zhang Yuquan's overwintering earthworm shed, each about 1 meter wide and about half a meter high. "This is the 'earthworm bed'. In winter, the bed is laid in the greenhouse. In spring, it is removed from the greenhouse and spread on the earth." Zhang Yuquan of Panjin Yulin earthworm breeding cooperative said, "the main components of earthworm bed are papermaking sludge and cow dung. Earthworms grow fast when they eat this." Push aside the soil layer, and the pink earthworms are clearly visible. "These small earthworms have great ability to turn sludge into organic fertilizer. They not only solve the problem of paper mills, but also bring millions of yuan to cooperatives. They really kill many birds with one stone."

In 2009, Yulin earthworm breeding cooperative was established, and an earthworm breeding base integrating earthworm breeding, drying and frozen storage with an area of 120 mu and 1000 beds was built.

There is a large paper mill in liaohekou ecological economic zone. The sludge discharged by the paper mill is a good feed for breeding earthworms. The digestive tract of earthworms is a natural organic waste treatment plant. Earthworms devour the sludge in the process of sludge treatment. The sludge enters the earthworm and is digested to discharge earthworm dung. Yulin earthworm breeding cooperative can digest more than 20000 cubic meters of papermaking sludge every year, which not only reduces breeding costs and increases benefits, but also plays a role in green environmental protection.

Vermicompost has suitable pH, water and fertilizer retention properties, and contains trace elements required by plants. It is an efficient biological fertilizer. Panjin farmers are willing to use earthworm dung as fertilizer when raising rice seedlings or planting greenhouse vegetables. The earthworm dung of Yulin earthworm breeding cooperative is always in short supply. Over the past year, Yulin earthworm breeding cooperative has sold 62000 cubic meters of earthworm dung, making a profit of 1.2 million yuan.

According to Zhang Yuquan of Yulin earthworm breeding cooperative, the green industrial chain of earthworm breeding has broad market prospects and has attracted many attention. Earthworms have high medicinal value. Dried earthworms are sent to pharmaceutical factories at a price of 80000 to 100000 yuan per ton. This year, the cooperative made a total profit of 500000 yuan from the production of dry earthworms. Next year, Yulin earthworm breeding cooperative will continue to expand its industrial scale and drive more nearby farmers to cultivate earthworms. At present, cooperatives can consume 1 / 4 of the sludge of paper mills. In the future, cooperatives will breed more earthworms and eat all paper sludge, which will not only bring more environmental benefits, but also give earthworm farmers greater economic returns.
